A native Oregonian, I call Portland my home. I have been writing code since I could get my hands on a computer at around twelve years old. My first programs were in basic for the TI-99-4A and I moved from there to an IBM XT, coding in C. Never really thinking about a career in software development, I found myself at the University of Oregon enrolling in Computer Science. That first year they did a fairly good job weeding out most of those in enrolled in CS by teaching us Scheme (a better version of LISP). But at that point, I was hooked.
After getting my bachelor's degree in computer science, I got a job at a small company developing low level software in C++ using Microsoft tools and compilers. From there, I joined a larger company which exposed me to the Palm computing platform, networking, C#, "Big Data", e-commerce, lean software development, agile, team leadership, management and so much more. Those were certainly my formative years and I found that, more than anything, I loved to learn. After 8 years there, though I loved the people I was working with and the work I was doing, I knew I needed to move on. If I was to continue learning journey, I needed to move to a larger company.
I set my sights on Intel but realized that (after looking at the job descriptions), I needed more education. At the time a master's degree was the minimum requirement for all the jobs I looked at. So, I went back to school (Portland State) and got a master's degree in computer science and a few months after receiving my degree, I got a job at Intel.
At Intel, I have moved around a lot, driven by my desire to learn as much as I can and applying that new knowledge to the job. Mid-way through, I went back to school again and got an MBA from the University of Portland.
This blog is the next step in my learning journey. I'm not planning on getting a PhD (yet), but I can't stop myself from digging even deeper into the craft that I've grown to adore. This blog will be the parking lot for my thoughts and ideas on the vastness that is software development.
